Event Announcement: Critical Skills for Credit Union Directors

We are pleased to announce that Glatt Consulting will be leading the entire curriculum for the upcoming Critical Skills for Credit Union Directors conference in Lake Tahoe.

Hosted by CU Conferences, this event is unique in its format. Unlike standard conferences with disjointed guest speakers, Tom Glatt will serve as the sole facilitator for the entire experience.

This structure allows for a cohesive narrative journey. We won't just discuss high-level theories; we will build a practical governance system from the ground up. Over two days, attendees will move from the foundational principles of modern oversight to the specific design of their annual board calendar.

The Curriculum: A Cohesive 2-Day Workshop

Tom has engineered this year's agenda to address the specific challenges of the 2026 economic environment. The curriculum is designed to help directors move from reactive "compliance checking" to proactive strategic leadership.

Tuesday: Foundations of Modern Governance

1. Modern Governance Essentials: Moving Beyond Compliance Many boards are trapped in a cycle of reactive compliance, focusing on "checking boxes" rather than driving value. This opening session introduces a framework that prioritizes adaptability over bureaucracy.

2. Defining the Board’s Job: Eliminating Ambiguity One of the biggest sources of friction in the boardroom is role ambiguity. We will map out the six distinct domains of board oversight to create a clear "Job Description" for directors, eliminating "phantom work" and role overlap.

3. Financial Oversight: Identifying Leading Indicators Effective oversight requires looking through the windshield, not just the rearview mirror. We will shift focus from lagging financial statements to leading indicators—the specific metrics that predict future safety and soundness.

4. Strategic Agility: Direction vs. Planning We will clarify the critical distinction between "strategic direction" (the board’s role) and "operational planning" (management’s role). This session explores how to implement a feedback loop that allows the credit union to adapt to market shifts without the board crossing into micromanagement.

5. Measuring Success: Oversight Without Micromanagement How do you ensure performance without inspecting every daily task? We will examine how to design effective Performance Dashboards that separate strategic signals from operational noise.

Wednesday: Culture, Execution & The Roadmap

6. The Cooperative Difference: Member-Centric Governance In an increasingly commercialized industry, retaining the cooperative differentiator is a strategic advantage. We will audit the board's alignment with member interests and democratic rights.

7. The Proactive Agenda: Building a Year-Round Calendar Theory is ineffective without execution. We will conclude the conference by converting the concepts learned into a tangible Annual Governance Calendar.
