In almost every boardroom I sit in, executives eventually present a dashboard containing hundreds of performance metrics. I frequently observe leadership teams attempting to manage daily operational stability and long-term strategic execution using the exact same set of indicators. This approach inevitably leads to initiative fatigue and misaligned priorities.

When I analyze the highest-performing institutions in our industry, a clear pattern emerges. Elite credit unions enjoy exceptional operational health and exceptional strategic performance, but they consider these two realms of measurement entirely differently. They establish Key Health Indicators (KHIs) to protect the current asset, operating as rigid, non-negotiable guardrails. Simultaneously, they utilize Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) strictly to measure future disruption and strategic evolution.

You cannot effectively execute ambitious OKRs if your underlying KHIs are faltering. This week, we finalized our Q2 2026 industry dataset, revealing exactly where those operational guardrails are currently being tested across the credit union system.
